Zak Brown explains why it is that McLaren is the only team yet to run the upgraded Mercedes engine.

While Mercedes was first to get its hands on the new engine (natch!), introducing it, to great effect, in Austria, Williams and Alpine received theirs in time for this weekend's race at Silverstone.

Which left only McLaren waiting on the new unit... cue all manner of conspiracy theories on social media.

However, speaking at the Northamptonshire track, Zak Brown explained the situation.

"We need to get the current Mercedes engine," he admitted. "We're the only one without the new engine, which will be coming for us shortly."

Sniffing a bit of controversy, the American was asked if not having the upgraded unit was leading to frustration and thereby tension between his team and Mercedes, the Woking outfit having won back-to-back constructors' titles with the German manufacturer's engines and last year's Drivers' Championship.

"Of course we'd like to have it," he said. "Any time you have performance that you know is coming but you don't have it on your car yet, you want to get it as quickly as possible.

"But I wouldn't say it's a frustration," he insisted. "It is what it is and we just keep our head down and keep pushing hard and it'll be in the back in the not too long.

"You've got to cycle through your engines," he explained, "and we've got life left on our current engines, so we need to wait till we do an engine change.

"Williams got theirs because Carlos had his issues, he needed an engine change," he continued. "I don't recall exactly the scenario but I think you've got two of them. So, it's just a timing sequence."
